What are some inspiring and enriching music documentaries that educators can share with their students?
"It Might Get Loud" a documentary on the electric guitar featuring Jack White, Jimmy Page and The Edge had the guitar players in my class running up and down the room while "Stairway to Heaven" played on the screen.

I've really got to see this one, thanks for sharing Hernando!

I've got a couple that are really inspiring. First, is this 2007 documentary called War Dance, which tells the story of three young children in northern Uganda who come from war-ravaged families. At a very young age, the three of them were witnesses to unspeakable violence and tragedy. The film tells their stories and follows them as they prepare for and ultimately perform at an annual national music competition in their nation's capital. All I can say it is unbelievably inspiring and clearly convinces me that music is the most powerful elixir for all troubles and ailments. Watch the YouTube preview here, and order it on Amazon.com here.

Second, is an upcoming documentary called Alice Dancing Under the Gallows, about the 107 year old classical pianist and oldest living Holocaust survivor, Alice Herz-Sommer. This film has gotten a lot of buzz as the trailer has been floating around on YouTube. Alice's story is, in my mind, the ultimate testament to the healing power of music. Music is her life and has enabled her to forgive the horrendous suffering that was brought upon her. Makes sure to look out for this one - it's scheduled to be released in Spring 2011, and can be pre-ordered here.

School of Rock!!! Jack Black can do his magic when it comes to inspiring Middle School students. We watched this with the after school program participants last week and from now on students demand that before every performance we gather in a circle and say "God of Rock, thanks for this opportunity to rock and blow everyone in the audience off of their minds"
