Profile Information

About me:
I am a music theory teacher (among other things) at Fei Tian Academy of the Arts California in San Francisco. The school was established in March, 2010 with the goal of establishing a curriculum that incorporated the arts. Students at our school (grades 6 to 12) choose an artistic major in dance, music, or fine arts, and spend between 2 and 3 hours per day practicing and learning about their art.
What does music mean to you?
Music - particularly sightreading chamber music - has always been a good way for me to connect with friends. Now, I teach at a school where the arts are considered to be an integral part of students' education. It is a way to help them think and use their minds in different ways. Students select music, dance, or fine arts as their arts specialization.
Why is the music-based service movement important to you?
Music and other arts are meant to help people connect with themselves and with each other. People are also naturally social, and learning to serve others is an important part of developing as an individual. Putting the two together is a logical step. I also see it as a potential opportunity for the music department and music students at my school to use music to connect with and serve others. I see the development of their capacity and desire to connect with and help others - especially through their art - to be an important part of their development.
Musical Interests
Performance, Theory, Listening Appreciation

Where I serve:
I teach music theory (and several other subjects) at Fei Tian Academy of the Arts in San Francisco. The school's website is http://www.feitian-california.org, and we are also on Facebook and Twitter.
