Profile Information

About me:
Hernando Buitrago is a guitarist, song-writer and educator. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Hernando discovered the magic of guitar while listening to 60's Rock. He later moved to Boston, MA where he received a B.A. in Professional Music from Berklee College of Music. After graduation he realized that there was something in music that had affected his experience so far but that he had not been able to pinpoint until then, something that went beyond composing and being on stage. It was music's ability to transcend other forms of learning by giving young people a new space to interpret the world and succeed. As a result, he decided to volunteer and later had the opportunity to work as the Music Clubhouse Coordinator in a Boston area youth development organization. With support from the community and the Music and Youth Initiative, he helped develop and run a program that gave inner city youth access to musical instruments and a recording studio. Currently serving as a MusicianCorps Fellow in San Francisco, Hernando serves at the Horace Mann Middle School in the Mission District and at June Jordan School for Equity in Excelsior.
What does music mean to you?
Music has allowed me to identify as an individual. As a child, I yearned for a path that would set me apart and when I found music I knew it was "it".
Now, music is a part of my daily life. It allows me to express myself and communicate with those around me.
Why is the music-based service movement important to you?
Musical thinking and the ability to communicate through music is to me as high priority for an individuals development as literary and math skills. The Music National Service upholds these belief by bringing music and artistic development to communities that need it.
Musical Interests
Composition, Performance, Promotion, Theory, Listening Appreciation

My service mission:
At Horace Mann Middle School, I provide instruction for guitar and ensemble classes during after-school programming, develop opportunities for arts integration and create music learning and performance opportunities for all school participants. At June Jordan High School, I'm instructing music classes and creating performance opportunities for students, as well as developing a teacher/student after school band.

One little nugget from my experience at the Walden School's Teacher Training Intensive

Posted on August 23, 2011 at 9:00pm 1 Comment

In the beginning of August I had the opportunity to spend a week with about 40 music teachers from around the country who converged in Dublin, NH for the Walden School's Teacher Training Intensive. Everyday was full of activities. We would go from a Musicianship class to an Improv session to a Solfege and Rhythms class. In every class we would  explore numerous ways in which a music teacher can guide their students into understanding musical concepts and give them the necessary tools to build… Continue

Check these recordings out from the music class at June Jordan School for Equity. The covers of Viva La Vida and Sunshine of Your Love are from 7th period classes. Tighten Up and the two original grooves were recorded by the after school band "Jaguar".

Most of these young musicians discovered much of their talent this year through bi-weekly…

Moments of self doubt and delivering a good performance (Ms. Laura's students at MetWest High School)

Posted on February 25, 2011 at 4:22pm 0 Comments

There is a town hall every Friday morning at MetWest High School in Oakland, CA where current MusicianCorps Fellow Laura Cambron serves two days a week. The town hall is an opportunity for the school community to share updates and highlight the amazing work that students do every week. On Friday, February 25 Fellows that serve in the Bay Area, including myself, had the opportunity to see Ms. Laura's students in action as they performed an original song and two covers. We came in early to…
