About me:
Hi everyone
Javier here! In 2008 I moved to Chicago IL, where I started to develop a new perspective about music diversity. In 2009 I began to work as a Teaching Artist and became a Musician Corp Fellow for Music National Service. As a musician, I played with the Lakeside Jazz Ensemble, Nuestro Tambò, Jorge Emmanuelli y sus Bomberos (a Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena music groups settled in Chicago),R&B recording artist Mekole Well, and pianist Rhe Washington, Chicago’s very own saxophone player Frank Catalano and well known Cuatro player Yomo Toro. Also I played with the Chicago Cuatro Orchestra, a group comprised by children and young musicians who play that Puerto Rican folkloric string instrument. I'm a contributor for World Percussion and Rhythm Magazine, some of my articles are: Rhythms of Puerto Rico for Drumkit: Bomba Rhythms for the Drumset and Plena Rhythm; Traditional sound for contemporary drummers.I had the pleasure to work as a Teaching Artist with CAPE, Urban Gateways and most recently with Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center. In 2010 and 2011, I was nominated as a Teaching Artist of the Year in the music category by 3Arts Organization. From the boys’ brotherhood to the fellows brotherhood

Recently, we had a Garage Opening at La Casita Boy’s Home. During the last month, I saw how much enthusiasm and energy these kids put in this event. They were absolutely in charge of how the show should be: selecting songs, rehearsals, arrangement, logistics and brainstorming. During the process, I observed and understood how important is to live the present, accept our…

Welcome to the Jungle....

We've been rehearsing for the last month at La Casita, the Boys' Home, for the exciting upcoming event of their Garage Opening. (The Garage is a man cave of sorts that they've raised money to build and dedicate for the boys' recreational use.) They've chosen four songs: Day-O, In the Jungle, and 2 originals. The enthusiasm is on the rise as they're learning to play guitar. They're very aware of their own struggles and conditions, so they know their limitations and choose their… Continue

Recently, some of my students came to the after-school program with huge enthusiasm because they wanted to learn how to play an instrument. ”Hey Javier, I want to play the drum set, I got the call (like a divine message), I can feel the beat inside of me, it is my nature”. Two weeks later, they were playing a beat with a lot of interest. After a month, they started to bring a lot of questions and…

“By knowing your enemy and knowing yourself,

You can fight a hundred battles without disaster”.
Sun Tzu (The Art of War)

Sometimes Teachers and Teaching Artists need to use conventional methods to reach their goal in the classroom. But I believe that war strategies can also be used to overcome unique classroom situations, especially when you are working in an alternative high school setting. I am talking here about challenging the students in different ways, where they… Continue

To be or not to be a Teaching Artist?

Ok… I am a Musician. Someone asked me if I wanted to be a Teaching Artist, but what that means? a teaching what? an Artist? Yes, these were my first questions and thoughts when I heard the concept for the first time. The Teaching Artist definition was introduced to me in a two weeks intensive training that I attended in San Francisco, as part of Music National Service, a pilot program.

At first glance, this word was awkward, I was confused… Continue
