Currently a second-year master's student in horn performance at the University of Delaware, Michael is interested in using music as a tool for civic engagement and community building. He wants to eventually start his own non-profit organization that explores these ideas. As a student, he is the graduate assistant for the Office of Service Learning in which he helps coordinate programs such as the Service Learning Scholars Summer Symposium and the Alternative Breaks Program. Michael also plays horn in the ProjectMUSIC woodwind quintet, a service-learning program where four different chamber ensembles made up of UD students regularly put on exciting educational performances for Richardson Park Elementary students.
Michael received a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of North Texas in May 2010. After graduating with his Master's from the University of Delaware in May 2012 he hopes to move to Philadelphia and begin working in the non-profit sector.
Music is an expression of the human condition and as such can be a very effective tool for the improvement of a community and society.
Why is the music-based service movement important to you?
Music-based service is important to me because I have always enjoyed serving and teaching others. In the past couple of years, I have become very passionate about doing activist work and music-based service is a perfect fusion of the two.
