Profile Information

About me:
Current Music Fellow: I am a multidimensional Bay Area urban vocalist, composer, singer/songwriter, arranger and educator. I earned her B.A. in jazz/popular music at Francisco State University and my M.M. in jazz composition and performance at Northern Illinois University. I’ve worked with a variety of creative artists in many genres including, jazz, Rhythm and blues, soul, funk, experimental and electronic music; but I’m all improvisatory music. I also have an extensive teaching background, serving as music mentor and educator for Maywood Fine Arts School in the Chicago metro and as a Music Director for Kids Take the Stage music and theatre company in Alameda, taught jazz vocal music and jazz theory at San Francisco School of the Arts.
What does music mean to you?
Music is very important to me and plays a large role in my life the following various roles include but are not limited to: the time passer, the great romancer, the subconscious nostalgic memory enhancer, the mood changer, the attitude shifter, the Lord help me get through this long work day before I go 51 50 on my co-worker up-lifter, the anti- stressor, my creative professor, the ego changing higher conscience elevator, the political persuader, the internal peacemaker, the justice, unity, greenearth and love advocator…
Why is the music-based service movement important to you?
The Music National Service movement is important to me because in many different ways. But here I’ll just name a few, because I don’t want write a dissertation on the subject, and trust me … I can ramble. MNS caught my attention by chance. As a formally educated, music performer and educator and in our global current economic crisis, I found myself out of fulltime work. The few music education jobs in the bay area are priority granted to NCLB certified and/or “well seasoned” educators. Not giving up hope in my search, I happened on the MNC website. I watched youtube video footage of last year’s music fellows in action and listened to Kiff Gallagher (CEO, Founder) speak on talk radio about MNS and I was impressed. Impressed by the work MNS was doing in the community, impressed by the passion Kiff spoke with, but most of all impressed by the difference in the approach the teaching of music MNS takes. The ideal that ‘music is for everyone’ often time gets lost in formal education. Those students whom are the most gifted/ and or talented get that special attention or extra push, while students whom may not be as talented often get lost in the shuffle. Watching MNS footage, the music service aspect is understood and any and all whom want to participate in music are given the opportunity. I applied to become a MusicianCorps Fellow and am now a part of the MNS team.

When it’s Time to Change You’ve Got to Rearrange.

Today I visited Met West High School in Oakland California, and had an opportunity to sit in on MusicianCorps Fellow, Laura Cambron’s, music class as they prepared for a performance planned for the schools ‘Town Hall’ assembly.  After the group played through their songs, I was given a chance to critique the performers; wholly, they worked well together, exuded confidence and had fun making music, but individually, uncertainties lurked.

I did get a change to work one on one with one… Continue
