What does music mean to you?
I started singing at the age of 2 with my father at the piano. I was hooked immediately. I went on to sing throughout high school in community and school musicals, in an acapella group, at chorus festivals, and professionally in both a jazz duo and rock band. In college I continued to sing with an all women a cappella group and after graduating traveled with the 12 ladies around the world performing. I have since sung professionally in musical theatre, with wedding bands, and as a jazz singer. I am most inspired by songwriting and am currently recording an album of original tunes.
Why is the music-based service movement important to you?
I love the idea of giving back to the arts throughout your artistic career, in whatever way is possible. I have always been incredibly passionate and inspired by arts education, specifically elementary education, however I have primarily worked in private school settings and would like an way to bring my work to a more diverse economic student spectrum. I am excited that there is an organization focused on uniting those with the shared interest of serving their community through the arts.
Musical Interests
Composition, Performance
Musical Expertise
Piano, Vocal
Where I serve:
At San Francisco public schools.
My service mission:
I am interested in offering an intimate music and theatre after school program regularly at a san francisco public school. This class would be modeled after the classes I teach at private schools, would be geared towards 5-8 year olds and would have no more than 8 students per class.

In addition, I would like to offer my services as a performer at fundraising events and parties. I will continue to use my gigs as a platform to raise money for causes related to children and the arts.

Hi Miranda,

What have you been up to in the classroom recently? Can you share some resources or thoughts on teaching early elementary schoolers? Any tools you've found particularly helpful in the classroom?

Thanks!

Hey Miranda,

Good to see you on the Music National Service site. I think adding a musical theatre element to after school programs is great. I taught musical for Kids Take the Stage for about 3 years. We did some all classic musicals, but I so feel in love with "Once on This Island".
